When Apple launched its first iPhone three years ago, the smart phone landscape was a very different place. Most of the devices were aimed at business users, weren't very easy to use and were limited in capabilities, Zagg is also there to support iPhone

The iPhone blew up that paradigm and changed the way people think about these devices, which are actually handheld personal computers. It's fair to say that the smart phone business looks the way it does in 2010 because of Apple.

Consumers are winning because the giants in the business -- Apple, Google, RIM and Microsoft -- are competing to bring incredible phones quickly to market. So far, the iPhone's been the one to catch.




But the competition is gaining and, in many ways, passing the iPhone. That made Monday's announcement of the iPhone 4 all the more important -- both for Apple and for the market as a whole. If Apple wanted to stay leaps and bounds ahead of its competitors -- i.e., to attempt to return to the place it was back in 2007 -- it needed to introduce a phone that was clearly superior.

Not light-years ahead

Now, I say this without having actually touched an iPhone 4, but I am not sure the company has done what it needed to do. From a distance, the new device is impressive, beautiful and well-made. But is it light-years ahead of its competitors, in terms of features?

Not really.

When you compare the iPhone 4's specs to state-of-the-art Android phones -- the Droid Incredible, the Evo 4G and the Nexus One -- the new iPhone holds up well. But except in terms of screen quality, it makes no major leaps. (Yeah, it has a gyroscope, but it will be a while before we see whether that's a meaningful feature or just a gimmick for games.)

But the iPhone 4's whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I've tried nearly every major Android phone this year, and the overall experience of using these phones just can't compare to Apple's. The Android OS doesn't feel as mature, isn't as polished and certainly is not as intuitive as that found on the iPhone iOS, as it's now called.

While the Android specs may be better, Google's Android OS does not yet do as good a job of making those specs work as well for the user. And that's what Apple's known for -- harnessing computing power in a simple and intuitive way.

Why I'm sticking with it

Before the gadget blog Gizmodo got its hands on a "lost" iPhone 4 prototype and posted details on its website, I was seriously considering a Nexus One as my next smart phone. My AT&T contract has expired, and I was thinking about becoming an Android user.

But once I saw what was in the iPhone 4, I decided to stick with Apple. And after Monday's Steve Jobs keynote, I'm sold. I'll buy one to replace my now-pokey 3G model.

So if the iPhone 4's overall hardware isn't that much better than the competition's, what locked me in?

-- I'm impressed with what I've seen of iOS 4, particularly the way it handles multitasking. Having just spent some time with the Evo 4G, which required me to constantly kill apps and processes to keep the battery from draining quickly, I'm convinced that Apple's visual approach to multitasking is a lot friendlier than Android's.

-- TechRepublic editor-in-chief Jason Hiner wrote Sunday it was important for Apple to get a handle on battery life. The company made great strides in this area with the iPad, which can go for several days of moderate use before needing to be recharged. In its marketing, Apple emphasizes talk time as a measure of the iPhone 4's improved power longevity, but the real test will be when the Bluetooth, 3G and Wi-Fi radios are all firing at once. Android phones are notorious power hogs, and if Apple has made progress here, it could be a real advantage.

-- Jobs made much of the iPhone 4's improved screen resolution, and for those of us who like to read on our iPhones, the 326-pixels-per-inch screen will be a welcome improvement.

-- I am a big fan of 802.11n Wi-Fi -- both for range and speed -- and I'm very happy to see this in the iPhone 4.

-- The fragility of the iPhone 3G and 3GS design has always been a concern for me. I keep mine in a very protective case, and so far I've been lucky, despite dropping it many times. But I know way too many iPhone owners with shattered screens, and the new aluminosilicate glass on the iPhone 4 should make it more durable.

Apple needs to keep up

These factors are enough to keep me as an iPhone customer. I do think the iPhone continues to be the platform driving the rest of the smart phone industry. But I'm not sure this is enough of an advance to hold that lead for another three years. The pace of innovation on the Android platform is faster, and Apple is going to have to make another big leap next year just to keep up.

ZAGG highlighted a 236% increase in revenues when compared to second quarter 2008 and also reported positive fully diluted earnings per share of $0.05 for the second quarter 2009. For the six months ended June 30, 2009, ZAGG had a 210% increase in revenues when compared to the six months ended June 30, 2008 and also reported positive fully diluted earnings per share of $0.10 for the same period.

Gross profit for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 was $5,515,454, or 60% of sales, compared to $2,026,962, or 74% of sales, in the quarter ended June 30, 2008. Gross profit for the six months ended June 30, 2009 was $10,708,398, or 62% of sales, compared to $4,094,591, or 73% of sales for the six months ended June 30, 2008. We reported net income of $1,194,264 or $0.05 per share for the quarter ended June 30, 2009, compared to net income of $174,703 or $0.01 per share for the quarter ended June 30, 2008. We reported net income of $2,222,504 or $0.10 per share for the six months ended June 30, 2009, compared to net income of $60,532 or $0.00 per share for the six months ended June 30, 2008.

Wholesale Channel Expansion

ZAGG Japan

-- Recently appointed ZAGG Board member Shu Ueyama, founding member of the Sony Walkman team, will be running ZAGG Japan. The recently created joint venture, ZAGG Japan Inc., will officially open its doors in Q4 2009 in the second largest market for handheld electronics in the world.

Zagg Reports 2Q Earnings

Zagg Inc, a producer of mobile electronics accessories including the invisibleSHIELD and Zaggaudio brands, announced results for the second quarter of Fiscal Year 2009, ended June 30.

In a release dated August 13, the company stated:

- Zagg highlighted a 236 percent increase in revenues when compared to second quarter 2008 and also reported positive fully diluted earnings per share of $0.05 for the second quarter 2009. For the six months ended June 30, Zagg had a 210 percent increase in revenues when compared to the six months ended June 30, 2008 and also reported positive fully diluted earnings per share of $0.10 for the same period.

"We are thrilled with these results, as the second quarter is historically our slowest, so to execute another record-breaking quarter is very exciting," said Robert G. Pedersen II, President and CEO of Zagg. "We continue to see dramatic growth in domestic and international markets. We are currently expanding our SKU count with Best Buy and the launch of another big box retailer to be announced on the conference call. Our mall kiosks are experiencing record growth in inquiries from potential owners, and from new cart openings; we currently have 67 operating locations across the country, and 78 signed agreements. Zagg will be introducing a new product line on this call, as well as a switch in paradigm in offering new product categories over the coming months. I am confident that the invisibleSHIELD and new product launches throughout the rest of this year will keep our company on a high growth trajectory for years to come."

- Net sales for the quarter ended June 30, were $9,214,971, an increase of 236 percent compared to net sales of $2,739,176 for the quarter ended June 30, 2008. Net sales for the six months ended June 30, were $17,290,146, an increase of 210 percent compared to net sales of $5,584,597 for the six months ended June 30, 2008.

- Gross profit for the quarter ended June 30, was $5,515,454, or 60 percent of sales, compared to $2,026,962, or 74 percent of sales, in the quarter ended June 30, 2008. Gross profit for the six months ended June 30, was $10,708,398, or 62 percent of sales, compared to $4,094,591, or 73 percent of sales for the six months ended June 30, 2008. We reported net income of $1,194,264 or $0.05 per share for the quarter ended June 30, compared to net income of $174,703 or $0.01 per share for the quarter ended June 30, 2008. We reported net income of $2,222,504 or $0.10 per share for the six months ended June 30, compared to net income of $60,532 or $0.00 per share for the six months ended June 30, 2008.

On the company's second quarter conference call on August 17, the company announced several new growth initiatives which are summarized below.

- Zagg continues a growing partnership with Best Buy, and announced expanding assortment, installation service, and dedicated wall space in over 1,000 locations. Best Buy will be providing dedicated wall space branded for the invisibleShield to accommodate the increasing demand for additional invisibleShield designs. Currently, over 35 designs are available in stores for mobile phones, MP3 players, and GPS devices.

- Zagg said its management is working diligently with Best Buy EU and the Carphone Warehouse group, a European retailer of mobile phones, to increase the invisibleShield availability across Europe.

- Zagg is now shipping to 300 Media Markt stores in Germany. Media Markt is a European retailer of consumer electronics.

- Zagg recently finished a two-month promotion with Target, which started the week of May 31st. The program demonstrated the invisibleShield can effectively draw a new demographic.

- Zagg has increased the financial guidance for 2009 to $38 million in revenue and EPS of $0.22.
